The Ahmedabad metro is a Rapid transit system in Ahmedabad, India with two operational lines- Red and Blue Lines. The blue line began its operations in 2019, while the red line was started in 2022. The Ahmedabad metro consists of 15 operational stations and it is operated by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC). By now it is only operational to a specific number of stations, however, according to the two-phase plan it will connect the urban Gandhinagar and modern GIFT city in a few years.
On 2nd October the 21 corridor of the Ahmedabad station became operation for the public between Thaltej and Vastral with 17 Stations and the project also consists of the 6.6 km underground section with four stations
This metro is ranked as the eighth-best metro system in India. According to the Ahmedabad metro route plans, There will be 32 stations with 2 Lines constructed in Phase 1, and Two lines with 22 stations will be constructed in Phase 2.
Currently, a part of Phase-1 of the Ahmedabad Metro is operational which consists of six stations of the east-west corridor. The Ahmedabad metro route running underground for 6.53 km between Vastral Gam and Apparel Park became active on 6th March 2019 which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister.
Phase 2 will connect Gandhinagar to Ahmedabad, it is expected to have two corridors- Motera Stadium – and Mahatma Mandir which will have 20 stations with a 22.8 km stretch. And second one is from Gujarat National Law University – GIFT City consisting of 2 stations and a 5.4km route. The routes under Phase 2 will be completely elevated.
It is mainly built to reduce traffic on busy roads and provides convenience to passengers as it is considered to be the metro Politian city the metro carries approximately 75,000 passengers regularly and generates daily ticket revenue of Rs. 11 lakh to Rs. 12 lakh.
Ahmedabad Metro provides affordable fare prices which makes it easy for daily passengers to travel. Even though the Ahmedabad metro phase – 1 operates with convenient hours to accommodate the busy schedule of city residents.
The Ahmedabad metro's running hours are extended and there is an overall increase in travelers has been estimated to be 10%. The metro train frequency has also been raised from 30 minutes to 15 minutes.

Fare Terms
- The following are the permissible fares for travel within the GMRC network:
- token
- smart card
- Provisional paper ticket (to be used in case of AFC system failure)
- Only children under 3 feet (90 cm) in height are allowed to travel with an adult.
- The purchased token will be valid for use on the business day of purchase. The working day will be treated as per the applicable time table for Revenue Services.
- Travellers can purchase Fair Media/Products by paying through Cash or POS (Debit/Credit Card).
Refund of Token: Only unused CST (not used for admission) can be refunded within 30 minutes from the time of issue
Maximum permissible time: 20 minutes in case of exit from the same station and 90 minutes in case of exit from another station.
Luggage Limit:Passenger is allowed to carry 25 kg of baggage and 80 cm x 50 cm x 30 cm (length x width x height) baggage. Goods of size and/or weight in excess of this limit will not be permitted.
Punishment:
- A fine of Rs.200/- will be paid if caught attempting to take the token outside the GMRC premises.
- Fine of Rs.10/- per hour per person subject to a maximum of Rs. 50/- per person for staying in the paid area for more than the maximum permissible time.
- If the passenger is found without valid ticket in the paid area, then the passenger will have to pay a fine of Rs.50/- plus Rs.

The Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board carried out a study for urban transportation between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar in the year 2003.
In June 2005 the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation submitted a detailed project report for the construction of Ahmedabad metro. But it was abandoned to give priority to the Ahmedabad BRTS and suburban railway project.
The Ahmedabad metro project was designed in the year 2008 and the Union Cabinet of India approved Rs. 10,773 crores for the Ahmedabad metro project on 19th October 2014.
The central government also approved western railway land with the Botad-Sabarmati meter gauge line in November 2014. There was a groundbreaking ceremony which was held for the construction of a 6.5 km metro line on 14 March 2015.
After that, there was another groundbreaking ceremony which was held for North-South corridor construction on 17th January 2016. The Ahmedabad metro construction work began in March 2016.
The trail runs of trains were carried out in February 2019 on the 6.5 km long Vastral to Apparel Park section of the phase-1 – 1 line. On 6th March 2019, the Ahmedabad metro was opened to the public. The remaining construction of the Ahmedabad metro was completed by the end of December 2023.
