Namma Metro serves as a network transit system in Bangalore. This is the first metro rail project in India, which consists of 750V DC and the third rail on standard gauge. It is also known as Bangalore metro, or in Kannada, it is called ''our metro''. This was the first metro rail service to be operated in southern India.
This metro line, the purple line between Baiyyappanahalli and Mahatma Gandhi Road commenced on 15th April 2007. The metro line was opened to the public on 20th October 2011 by the development minister of Union Urban Kamal Nath. The purple line is also known as the east-west corridor, and the green line is known as the northernmost corridor.
There are no requirements for tickets for children whose height is below 3 feet. No age criteria were mentioned for small children traveling on the metro. Therefore, you will need to pay a 200 penalty if you lose your ticket or you travel without a ticket. Smart value cards' shelf life is one year from the date of added value or last added value. But you have the option to extend your smart card shelf life by giving Rs. 20/- at the customer care Centre of any station.

General Information:
The Ticket media used in Namma Metro is primarily contactless technology. These are:
- Tokens (for single journey)
- Contactless Smart Cards (for multiple journeys)
- QR code based Ticket
The electronic chip residing inside the Token or Smart Card contains information of a ticket.
Standard Tickets which can be loaded on Smart Cards: Stored Value Ticket (Varshik)
- Smart cards will be used to carry multiple trips
- The User can load an amount in multiples of Rs.50/- upto a maximum of Rs 3000/- into the Smart Card
- The stored value in the ticket will be reduced to the range of managed trips.
- Get 5% discount for smart cards, over token fare.
QR code based Ticket:
- Login using your valid credentials
- Proceed to Book Tickets (QR ticket)
- Select Source and Destination
- Select number of passengers
- Proceed for payment
- Get the QR-code/ticket
- Present the same QR code on the gate scanner to make entry & exit
- Validity of QR based ticket: One QR Ticket may be brought at a time, and it is valid for one day. The passenger may enter anytime during the day after purchasing a QR ticket.

- Add-value in the Smart Card shall be valid for one year from the date of last add-value. The validity extension can be done by paying administrative charges of Rs. 20/- at Customer Care Center of any station.
Namma metro is also called the Bengaluru metro, which serves Bengaluru, India, by providing a fast and comfortable mode of transportation to people. It happened the first time in history that the state town planning department had thought to look into a mass rapid transit project, therefore a metro facility for Bangalore city, in the year 1977. As per our information, the Southern Railway (SR) was appointed to get information about the metro in the year 1981, and after this, a team recommended a two-corridor metro, 80 km (50) in length.
In 1993, the state of Karnataka found another group to look into mass rapid transit but they recommended the same suggestion. After taking the suggestion the team made Bangalore Mass Rapid Transit Ltd (BMRTL) in the year 1994 for a 300 km (190 mi) long metro network that consists of 6 routes.
In the year 2003, the government of Karnataka provided commission to the DMRC and after that Delhi metro rail corporation created a detail and submitted the detailed project for the first line of Namma metro in May 2003.
On 25 April 2006, the project was approved by the union cabinet, and the construction of phase 1 was laid by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on 24 June 2006.
For the first contract for Reach 1 of the east-west corridor, Navayuga Engineering Company Limited was awarded.
On 20 October 201, Namma metro (Reach 1) finally opened to the public.
Namma Metro History (Key Dates)
Phase 1.
- 20 October 2011: Baliyyappanahalli to MG road – 6.7 km (purple line)
- 01 May 2014: Sampige road to Peenya Industry – 9.9 km (Green line)
- 01 May 2015: Peenya Industry to Nagasandra – 2.5 km, which was extended on the green line.
- 16 November 2015: Mysore road to Magadi road – 6.4 km, which was extended on a purple line.
- 30 April 2016: MG road to Magadi road – 4.8 km, which was extended on a purple line.
- 19 June 2019: Sampige road to Yelachenahalli – 12 km, which was extended on the green line.
Phase 2.
- 15 January 2021: there was another phase constructed from Yelachenahalli to Silk Institute – 5.8 km (Green Line)
- 30 August 2021: on the purple line, Mysore Road was extended to Kengeri – 7.5 km.
- 25 March 2023: on purple line KR Puram to Whitefield – 13.7 km
- 09 October 2023: Whitefield to Challanghatta is on purple line – 43.49 km
