The Chennai metro is known as the rapid mode of transit system, and it serves the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The Chennai Metro started its operation in 2015 to serve the people and make their traveling easier. This metro station has seven stations from Koyambedu to Alandur over a distance of 10 km. You will be amazed to know that Chennai Metro is planning to make use of solar power for five of its stations on the elevated corridor, and it will produce about 200 KW. 

The metro coaches in each train will have a first-class compartment, with tickets costing twice as much as the second-class compartment ticket. There are four main types of tickets provided by the Chennai Metro Rail Corporation: single journey tokens and stored value cards, which are rechargeable prepaid travel cards. The third one is trip cards, which are used for people traveling between the same two stations on an everyday basis. 

The last one is a tourist card, which provides unlimited rides to passengers. There is a discount provided by Chennai Metro on all tickets taken on Sunday, which is 50% the half of the ticket price.

  • The Chennai Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
  • The first operation began on 29 June 2015 for the public, which spanned the seven stations Koyambedu to Alandur over a distance of 10 kilometres.
  • The services operate daily between 4:30 and 23:00 with a varying frequency of 5 to 14 minutes.
  • Chennai Metro runs in standard gauge measuring 1,435 millimetres (56.5 in) and the lines are double-tracked.
  • The average speed of operation is 35 kilometres per hour (22 mph) and maximum speed is 80 kilometres per hour (50 mph).

  • There is a discount of 50% for all journeys taken on Sundays and public holidays, applicable with single journey tokens (rupees 5 to rupees 30) and Stored Value Cards (rupees 4 to rupees 27).
  • There are vaious slabs of penalties for offences starts from Rs. 50 to Rs. 5000 and imprisonment up to 10 Years. Charges depends on the type of penalty.

The oldest suburban railway network of Chennai was established in the year 1931 and it operated on the metro-gauge line. Chennai’s first mass rapid transit system was established in the year 1995 and it is considered as India’s first elevated line. 

The project for construction of Chennai metro was confirmed by the state cabinet on 7th November 2007 and planning commission gave the principle approval on 16th April 2008. The government of Chennai appointed the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to make a detailed project report on the Chennai Metro. 

For the Chennai metro network, there were seven lines which were planned by the DMRC. The construction work for the Chennai metro began on 10th June 2009, starting with the piling work. The Chennai metro's first tunnel boring machine was launched in July 2012. 

On 14th February there was a maiden trail run for the metro that was conducted in between the koyambedu station and the Ashok Nagar station. For the very first time in Chennai on 29th June 2015, commercial operation started between Alandur station and Koyambedu station.

On 21st September 2016, commercial operation started between Chennai International Airport metro station and Little Mount. On 14th May 2017, the first underground metro line started between Thirumangalam metro and Nehru Park metro station.

An underground blue line was opened on 10th February 2019 by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

𝒜. Chennai Metro is providing a few toilets in some of their metro stations, but soon, the Chennai Metro Rail Corporation will provide toilet facilities at other stations, too.

𝒜. All the coaches of Chennai metro will consist of four car rakes with a first class seating section in the coach closest to the operator and every coach will be air conditioned and have a dedicated space for women or separate coaches for women will be provided.

The Chennai metro does not allow items on their station such as:

  • Knife, meat cleaver, sword, blades and other sharp objects are not allowed.
  • Hand grenades, gunpowder, fireworks, plastic explosives or other explosive materials are not allowed. 
  • Petroleum, Paints, Wet batteries, Aerosol or other flammable items are not allowed. 
  • Blood, Unsealed meat/fish, plant sampling, skeletons, Carcasses of dead animals, bones, rags or any other offensive items are prohibited from being brought on the Chennai metro. 
  • Dogs, cats, birds or any other pet animals are not allowed to be brought to the Chennai metro station.
