The Kanpur metro has 2 lines and 30 stations which is partially operational and is under construction process by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRCL). The detailed project report of the Kanpur metro has about 32.385 km of routes and it was prepared by RITES and got approved by the state cabinet in March 2016 and finally by the central government cabinet in February 2019. 

The construction of phase – 1 metro was about 8.7 km (IIT Kanpur – Moti Jheel) which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India and the rest of phase – 1 metro is expected to be completely constructed and opened in December 2024. The estimated cost was Rs. 11,076 crore and 15.057 km is under construction. 

Phase – 1 of the Kanpur metro has a spanning network of 32.385 km which is going to be constructed with two lines – the Blue Line and the Orange Line. These two lines will connect important places in the city of Kanpur like hospitals, shopping malls, parks, educational institutions, etc. 

The Orange line of the Kanpur metro will consist of 23.785 km to run between IIT Kanpur to Naubasta and it will provide 22 metro stations. Therefore 15.164 km of this line would be elevated and the remaining part 8.621 km would be underground.

The 8.6 km of Blue Line corridor is elevated and it will run from Chandra Shekhar Azad University to Jaurali. The Blue Line of Kanpur metro will consist of nine stations and the corridor will have underground and elevated stations but the tender for this project is yet to be passed by the government of Uttar Pradesh. If the construction of this line is completed then it will connect populated residential areas of Kanpur which includes Kakadeo and Govind Nagar. The nine stations that the Blue Line of Kanpur metro includes are CSA University, GSVM Medical College, Rawatpur Railway Station, Kakadeo, Vijay Nagar, Dada Nagar, Barra – 7, Barra – 8 and Jarauli. There are tokens vending machines (TVM) and add value machines (AVM) installed at the Kanpur metro stations.

The Kanpur metro is owned by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC). This metro is considered as a mass rapid transit (MTR) system in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. 

In the year 2015, the Kanpur Metro Rail Corporation proposed the formation of the Kanpur metro and in March 2016 the government of Uttar Pradesh approved the detailed project report for the construction of metro lines and stations. 

After that, a detailed project report from the Uttar Pradesh government was sent to the central government in September 2018. The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath formally inaugurated civil work for Kanpur metro in November 2019. 

The construction of the IIT metro station which was the first metro station of the Kanpur metro was almost completed in July 2021. In November 2021 the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath flagged off the Metro train which will run on the entire priority corridor from 10th November. 

On 28th December 2021, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi inaugurated the start of commercial operation of Kanpur Metro.
