Kochi Metro Route & Map

Kochi Metro is an urban mass rapid transit system (MRTS) built to serve Kochi, which is the commercial capital of Kerala. This station has one elevated line and 21 stations for serving the people. The construction for the 25.16 km Kochi Metro Phase 1 project, which connects Aluva and Petta with 22 stations, started in 2013. 

After this, India's Prime Minister inaugurated the line's first 13.2 km section between the Aluva – Palarivattom on 17th June 2017. On 19th June 2017, the commercial operation commenced two days later. The Kochi metro phase 2 project, with an 11.2 km line and it consists of 11 stations, was approved by the Kerala government in July 2018 with an estimated cost of Rs 2,310 crore. 

This phase involves the construction of a spurn line, which starts from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and moves to Infopark 2 in Kakkanad. This phase is waiting for the central government approval and will be funded by the AFD, Agence Francaise de Developpement. The power supply of the Kochi metro station is 110 KV A.C. 

There are numerous announcements made about what kind of Kochi metro phase 3 will look like, but there is still detailed planning that is going to be made by the authorities. Phase 3 will possibly include a northern extension of line – 1 to Cochin International Airport in Nedumbassery to Angamaly.

The Kochi metro was also considered a rapid transit system that serves the city of Kerala, India. The idea for the construction of Kochi Metro was first started in the year 1999 by the ninth chief minister of Kerala whose name was E.K. Nayanar. 

On 21st July 1999, the government of Kerala assigned a project to Rail India Technological and Economical Services (RITES) for the study of the metro rapid transport system in Kochi. In the same year, RITES was submitted to the Kerala government.

On 22nd December 2004, the second government of Kerala was assigned to the DMRC Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to create a detailed project report on Kochi Metro. 

On 2nd January 2008, the Kochi Metro Project was sent for ratification to the central government. The PIB which is known as the public investment board cleared the project on 22nd March 2012 which was subjected to final approval by the Union Cabinet.

The decision to entrust the Kochi rail project work to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation was taken on 28 March 2012 in the KMRL board meeting. On 3rd July 2012, the union government provided the final clearance to the project. 

On 13th September 2012, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for the project. On 4th April 2013, the director board of KMRL signed a contract with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. 

On 7th June 2013, Construction work on the Kochi Metro Rail project started. On 19th June 2013, there were 22 stations of Kochi metro, which was approved by the state cabinet.

On 23rd January, the first trail run was flagged off by the chief minister, Oommen Chandy. The Kochi metro project was inaugurated in June 2017 with E. Sreedharan, who has already created the Konkan Railway and Delhi metro.
