The Navi Mumbai metro is considered as the rapid transit system which was built by City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The reason behind the construction of this metro was to reduce traffic and ease pressure on the railway network of Mumbai. Therefore this transportation mode is much cheaper than the taxis and auto-rickshaws of Navi Mumbai.
The Navi Mumbai metro was designed with five lines and covers a distance of about 106.4 km. The construction of the Navi Mumbai metro has developed the economic condition of the city and made the metro an important source of transportation system.
The operation of Navi Mumbai metro started on 17th November 2023 with no formal inauguration. This metro line was made because of the chief minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde who gave the order to CIDCO. On the day of the inauguration line – 1 of the Navi Mumbai metro operated from 3 PM to 10 PM between Belapur terminal and Pendhar and back. Later on, the CIDCO appointed Maha Metro as the metro rail operator of Navi Mumbai metro.
The cost for the construction of this metro line–1 project was Rs. 3,400 crore out of which Rs. 2,600 crore was already infused by CIDCO. The foundation stone of the Navi Mumbai metro was laid on 1st May 2011. Therefore the Corridor – 1 route includes Pendhar, Kharghar, Kalamboli, and Khandeshwar and there is another plan made by the government to extend the route of Navi Mumbai metro up to International Airport (NMIA). The Navi Mumbai Metro Corridor – 1 is based on the detailed project report (DPR) made by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
The line – 1 of Navi Mumbai metro will cover up to 23.4 km and there will be 20 stations on this line. Line – 2 of the Navi Mumbai metro will cover a distance of up to 10.3 km and it will cover MIDC Taloja station to Khandeshwar, there will be 8 stations between these two stations.

The Navi Mumbai metro consists of 1 metro line and in November 2011 construction of phase – 1 began but because of delays in approval and lack of government interest, it took a long time for its construction.
In June 2019, the CIDCO granted DMRC the principal approval to implement Line – 2 and Line – 3 in Navi Mumbai. The Maharashtra government is also planning to propose a 106.40 km route with 6 lines for Navi Mumbai.
In the mid of 2012, CIDCO awarded a 321 crore contract for the construction of 11.1 km from Belapur to Pendhar section to a Consortium of San Jose, Supreme Infrastructure, and Mahavira road Infrastructure in Navi Mumbai the project deadline was 2016 which was later extended to 2017 and then 2018 because as of January 2017, only 60% work of the Navi Mumbai metro station was done. The city and industrial development corporation which is the nodal agency for the Navi Mumbai metro project has approved the implementation of lines – 2, 3, and 4 with advanced mode of transport and Metroneo will be placed of standard gauge.
